Gretchen and the Bear Launch Party!

Image
Hello, dear reader friends! Due to the current restrictions on Pennsylvania libraries, I will be having a launch party for Gretchen and the Bear on Facebook on June 19 at 7 pm. Bad news--no cupcakes and book signing. Good n ews--you can attend from Timbuktu or Gobblers Knob or wherever you call home, and we will still have great fun! To RSVP, click here.  We will have giveaways, Q&A, a reading, and more. Lisa from Havok (flash fiction e-zine), fantasy author Kristin J. Dawson,  and author and improv queen Joanne Brokaw will be helping me host the extravaganza.  Please come and join me (and pray for no technical difficulties on my end, since I live in  a mountainy, bad internet area). Hope to "see" you soon! Keep reading! Carrie

The Countdown is On!

Hello there, reader friends! The days are creeping by but it won't be long now until June 17th, when Gretchen and the Bear hits the shelves and the shimmies into the Kindles! The Kindle version and hardback are up for preorder on Amazon now, and the paperback will soon follow (for some odd Amazonian reason). Books are also available on Barnes & Noble's site . Hurray! I am so excited about the hardcover. I want to show you what's under the dust jacket, because it's amazing! I also don't want to show you, because what a fun surprise it would be to discover it yourself! Okay, I'm going to do it. Shield your eyes if you don't want to see. That's the front and the spine of the "naked" book. I am giddy looking at it. I hope you like it, too! Here are a few nice endorsements: “Gretchen and the Bear transports the reader into a magical realm that is one part    sci-fi, one part fantasy, one part fairy tale. It's a brilliant mash-up, and I wa...

The Gold-Son News

Launch Party and Beyond Hi, all! I thought I'd share some photos from the launch party we had for The Gold-Son on June 30th. The James V. Brown Library of Williamsport, PA kindly allowed us to use their beautiful media room for our enchanted woods-themed festivities. A Leprechaun showed up for the party, courtesy of Dad's Garage Art. Thanks, Wayne Parfitt! Pot o' gold cupcakes sprouting rainbows, and other goodies! Bat cookies in honor of our Faerie-bat friend Copper Meringue mushrooms, chocolate mushrooms, shamrock cookies, forest berries... The author read aloud and then gave out fabulous prizes! Yes, I wanted to show off my cute dress. Author & her wonderful husband--who gave her the shiny tree. Not part of the party--but amazing gifts my publisher sent me to celebrate the book's release. Skyscape is the best!  Also...great news! Audiofile Magazine gave the audio book their Earphones Award for outstanding audio book...

The Beautiful Journey

Image
And the story grew wings and flew far...   A year ago--almost to the day--I entered my novel (now titled The Mermaid's Sister ) in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award contest. I had no intention of winning. I didn't really believe my entry would go far among ten thousand others, although I hoped it would get far enough to win the free manuscript review by Publishers Weekly offered as a prize for quarter finalists. And it did! Seashell, Stork and Apple Tree (the book's original title) received a glowing review from PW. I was thrilled! Mission accomplished. But wait! The ride wasn't over! I remember the July day when the phone rang and the caller i.d. said Amazon. I thought they were calling to ask how I liked a recent purchase. Instead, two very excited ladies gave me some of the best news of my life: I'd won the Young Adult category and was in the running for the grand prize. Not only that--they gushed over the book. They loved it. And I had thought that ...

What's a Wyvern?

Image
All About Osbert and His Possibly Bitey Relatives Hi! If you've seen the magnificent cover of my soon-to-be-released book The Mermaid's Sister , you've probably noticed the dragonny fellow twined about the title. If not, have a look now:   His name is Osbert, and he's a wyvern.   According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a wyvern (pronounced wye-vern) is "a mythical animal usually represented as a 2-legged winged creature resembling a dragon." The word is an "alteration of Middle English wyvere viper, from Anglo-French wivre, guivre, from Latin vipera," and its first known use dates back to 1610. The wyvern is frequently seen in heraldic crests, especially in Wales. Often depicted as having a dragon's head, a reptilian body, and barbed tail, the wyvern is sometimes said to have a poisonous bite. (My dear Osbert doesn't bite. Not usually, anyway.) In The Mermaid's Sister , Osbert is the household pet. He's o...
