It's 1987, and fairy tales are  about to become real...   Fairy tales are fun…until your life becomes one. Fifteen-year-old Frances Fye might be a little too obsessed with old books. But when grief and the loneliness of small-town life threaten to overwhelm her, stories carry her off to magical adventures. Then a new boy shows up at school—mysterious, magnetic, and shockingly similar to Fran’s favorite fictional hero. And when a wrong-number phone call leads to friendship with Trowbridge, an exiled bridge troll with sinister intentions, Fran’s world cracks wide open. Suddenly, the fairy tales she’s always loved aren’t just stories anymore. They’re real—and dangerous. Entangled in the deadly schemes of fae royalty, she has little choice but to depend on the most unlikely allies: her middle-aged English teacher who’s more than he seems, the secretly sensitive school rebel, and her less-than-charming ex. To escape the mythical lands she once longed for, Fran must face ...

NEW BOOK ALERT and other stuff... I am over-the-moon excited to share my new novel with you! This one is close to my heart, and I think you're going to love it! It's the story of a coal town girl who grows antlers and the moth-winged boy who wants to give her the world. And it comes out October 22, 2024 from Oliver Heber books!  Here's the official blurb:  An 1880’s coal town is no place for a girl with antlers. Once upon a winter’s day, a childless miner and his wife find baby Sabella in a mysterious basket. When she suddenly grows a pair of silvery gray antlers, they hide her from the world in embarrassment and fear. Seventeen years later, Sabella’s life is nothing but housework and loneliness—but charming, nineteen-year-old Calder arrives on her doorstep determined to change that. He knows her secret and has plenty of his own. Among them: he’s been her unseen protector for years, he has the wings of a moth, and he’s part of the Springborn: a group of people with ...

Reading Recommendations & Spring Updates

Image
Greetings from my reading nook/writing lair! I’ve been reading lots during the cold weather, haven’t you? Such a pleasant way to pass the time. I'm grateful for the warmth of spring (not that it will stop me from reading!).   Confession : I’m a big Kindle reader. I know, it’s no replacement for the feeling of a book in your hands and the scent of ink and paper, but the thing lights up so I can read in bed, and it holds a LOT of books. Now that I’ve confessed, I’ll tell you that I recently read 13 books in a series. Michelle Vernal’s Guesthouse on the Green series is about a quirky Irish family who run an inn. I can’t remember ever laughing out loud so much while reading! I got the series from Kindle Unlimited—which is part of the reason I put up with punctuation and spelling errors that infested the first several books. The newer ones are better in that regard. BUT I totally recommend the series if you like family ...

Holmberg Favorite hisorical fiction: The Fire and the Ore by Olivia Hawker and Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell Favorite romance: Scrooge and the Girls Next Door by Melanie Jacobson Fa...

The Gingerbread Queen is Coming!

A Brand New Queen 👑 Hello, reader friends! It's been a while. Life has been full of pitfalls and trials, but I am still here, poking away at the keyboard and making up stories. And I have some exciting news to share!  On November 15, 2022, I'll be launching a new novella for you on the Kindle Vella platform! If you're not familiar with Vella, it's a place where authors release stories in episode form (think of old Charles Dickens writing weekly episodes for the newspaper). The first couple chapters are free to read, and then there's a token system to get the next episodes (don't worry, it's easy!). I'll be posting 2 new chapters a week--just in time for winter's cozy reading season. Here's a bit about The Gingerbread Queen:  Hansel and Gretel's tale continues... Thirteen years after fleeing the witch’s gingerbread cottage, Gretel must return to hide from townsfolk who accuse her of being the evil crone’s successor. When the walls start to...

Book Journeys

Image
Hello, reader friends! It's been about a month since the release of Gretchen and the Bear , and I'm so pleased that people are enjoying the tale of Gretchen and Arthur!  Here's something I never really knew before I was published: the making of a book is a journey down an uncharted road. You start alone, but like a Hobbit on the way to Mordor, you pick up companions along the way--people without whom you'd never make it to the Land of Published Book (which is not anything like Mordor, fortunately, because all that fire wouldn't be good for the paper or the e-reader).  You are joined and encouraged by critique partners first, if you're blessed to have them. Next, your trusty first readers come along to offer help, guidance, and suggestions. The next part of the trip can be thorny and long, as you seek a publisher, but if you succeed in the quest, a skillful editor or two will saddle up alongside you for the next leg of the journey. You'll have to endure prick...

Gretchen and the Bear Launch Party!

Image
Hello, dear reader friends! Due to the current restrictions on Pennsylvania libraries, I will be having a launch party for Gretchen and the Bear on Facebook on June 19 at 7 pm. Bad news--no cupcakes and book signing. Good n ews--you can attend from Timbuktu or Gobblers Knob or wherever you call home, and we will still have great fun! To RSVP, click here.  We will have giveaways, Q&A, a reading, and more. Lisa from Havok (flash fiction e-zine), fantasy author Kristin J. Dawson,  and author and improv queen Joanne Brokaw will be helping me host the extravaganza.  Please come and join me (and pray for no technical difficulties on my end, since I live in  a mountainy, bad internet area). Hope to "see" you soon! Keep reading! Carrie

The Countdown is On!

Hello there, reader friends! The days are creeping by but it won't be long now until June 17th, when Gretchen and the Bear hits the shelves and the shimmies into the Kindles! The Kindle version and hardback are up for preorder on Amazon now, and the paperback will soon follow (for some odd Amazonian reason). Books are also available on Barnes & Noble's site . Hurray! I am so excited about the hardcover. I want to show you what's under the dust jacket, because it's amazing! I also don't want to show you, because what a fun surprise it would be to discover it yourself! Okay, I'm going to do it. Shield your eyes if you don't want to see. That's the front and the spine of the "naked" book. I am giddy looking at it. I hope you like it, too! Here are a few nice endorsements: “Gretchen and the Bear transports the reader into a magical realm that is one part    sci-fi, one part fantasy, one part fairy tale. It's a brilliant mash-up, and I wa...
